I've spent half a week in KOTA and I've already been invited to a wedding, played some clunky minigames, gone on 'dates', and spoken to a variety of interesting players.
One of them was a Chinese woman. She told me that four years ago she couldn't even say "hello", but through using Second Life alone, she's been able to develop her English skills to a competent level without the need to attend offline classes. "I just spent a long time listening to conversations in Second Life," she said, "and slowly I was able to understand what people were saying."
I also met an Electrical Engineering PhD student in the UK who apparently met his girlfriend on Second Life. Whether or not he was lying I'll never know for sure. He introduced me to an Italian singer who went on to sing some Italian songs with an acoustic guitar...
Anyway, it's been an interesting experience so far. I've been reading "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human" by Tom Boellstoff, and have been learning quite a lot from it. Perhaps I will write something about it later.
The Wedding
I don't have much to say here, I will just share some photos and a video that I took of the event.
